The History of Deep Creek Lake, MD

Created in 1925 to fulfill a need for electric power in Garrett County, Maryland, Deep Creek Lake, at an altitude of 2,468 feet, covers an area of 3,900 acres and is 13 miles long with 69 miles of shoreline. The lake is managed by the Maryland State Department of Natural Resources and continues to generate electricity, provide water for snow making to Wisp Resort, and maintain summertime lake water levels for a wide variety of recreational activities including two of the most popular, boating and fishing.
