The History of Garrett County, MD
In 1755 during the French and Indian War, George Washington used Indian trails to guide General Braddock through the area, which was to be known later as Garrett County, Maryland. In the 1850s, the expansion of the railroad brought the rich and famous of the day to this same area for recreation and relaxation, and in 1872, Garrett County, where Deep Creek Lake and McHenry are now located, became the newest and last of Maryland’s counties. It was named after John Work Garrett, the president of the B&O Railroad at that time. Throughout its history, Garrett County has been a place which has drawn those searching for an enjoyable lifestyle or vacation.
