Old Garrett County scenes

The History of Garrett County, MD

In 1755, during the French and Indian War, George Washington used Indian trails to guide General Braddock through the area. This was to become known later on as Garrett County, Maryland. In the 1850s, the expansion of the railroad brought the rich and famous of the day to this same area for recreation and relaxation. In 1872, Garrett County, where Deep Creek Lake and McHenry are now located, became the newest and last of Maryland’s counties. It was named after John Work Garrett, the president of the B&O Railroad at that time. Throughout its history, Garrett County has been a place that has drawn those searching for an enjoyable lifestyle or vacation.
